Have you ever heard the terms “Biliterate Reading Zones” and
“Biliterate Reading Trajectory”?
Literacy Squared team has developed, after
years of research, a holistic view of bilingualism that proves that emerging
bilingual students use their knowledge of both languages and cultures to develop
literacy in both languages. The authors of this interesting research use EDL2
and DRA2 as diagnostic measures to create a “trajectory of biliterate reading”.
This trajectory gives us information about the level of reading of the emerging
bilingual students in their first language and which would be the expected
level of reading in English. This information is very useful to plan
instruction and grouping in the classroom.
